Ph.D. Regalia Attire

The MIT graduation regalia is distinguished by a gray gown with red velvet trim lining the sleeve bars and front panels. Doctoral degree candidates wear an octagonal gray cap with a red tassel. Hoods are provided by the school during the Hooding Ceremony.

Quick History of MIT

Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private research university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT was founded in 1861 as a response to industrialization and was a university focused primarily on applied science and engineering. Although the campus is only 168 acres, the school has fostered many famous alumni that have changed the world. Recognized as one of the top universities in the world, MIT is acknowledged for helping advance the world into the digital age and for inspiring entrepreneurship.

Mascot

Tim the Beaver is the official MIT mascot and appears at many major MIT sporting events. Its name comes from simply spelling MIT backward. In 1914, the beaver was chosen as the animal because students recognized beavers as “nature’s engineers”. MIT sports teams refer to themselves as “the Engineers”.

Notable Rankings

MIT is best known for their engineering, and physical science programs (including economics, political science, urban studies, and linguistics). MIT is ranked number five in national universities. MIT has the largest number of NCAA- sponsored programs in the United States, and 20% of their undergraduates are supported by sports scholarships. The school’s main rivalry is with Caltech as both schools are known for their reputations as the top science and engineering schools in the United States. Rather than focusing their rivalry in sports like most schools do, these two universities focus primarily on pranks.
