Quick History of Michigan

The University of Michigan, also called UMich or U-M, is Michigan’s oldest university and was founded in 1817 in Detroit. The campus later changed locations to Ann Arbor, and eventually expanded into four campuses. The 40-acre campus in Ann Arbor is now called the Central Campus. U-M is famously known for its public research, and the many comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs offered. Athletics also play a crucial role in university life, and U-M has the second largest stadium in the world.

Mascot

University of Michigan’s sports teams are named after the school mascot and proudly call themselves the Wolverines. Back in the 1920s and 1930s, the university’s original mascot was a live wolverine named Biff the Wolverine who was kept in a small cage on campus.
