Ph.D. Regalia Attire

The Harvard University doctoral regalia is made of crimson with black velvet paneling and bars in the double-bell sleeves. The 4 corner black cap or velvet tam with a black tassel completes the outfit. Harvard’s doctoral hood is unique in that the black shell is velvet, instead of having a velvet trim like other schools.

Quick History of Harvard

Harvard University was established as a private Ivy League research university in 1636 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This university is the oldest institution of higher learning in the nation and was founded by Massachusetts legislature. Its name comes from the school’s first benefactor, John Harvard. Since its founding, it is known for some of their famous alumni, including some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and past presidents. The school is also famous for being home to the largest private library in the United States. Considered one of the world’s most prestigious universities, Harvard prides itself on its 375 years’ worth of history.

Mascot

Although Harvard’s official mascot is Pilgrim John Harvard, it has been replaced by the popularity of the school’s color, crimson. The color originally became popular in 1858 when Harvard’s rowing team wore red bandanas so that they could be distinguished from the other schools. The color is now the nickname for the university’s newspaper and sports teams as “The Harvard Crimson”.

Their fight songs even include the respective rival school’s name.
