Quick History of UCSB
Originally established in 1891 as an independent teacher’s college, it joined the UC School system and became the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1944. UCSB is considered one of the nation’s Public Ivy universities, which recognizes the school as a top public research university. This 1,055-acre suburban campus is one of the few schools that has its own beach and rests on cliffs that overlook the Pacific Ocean. The school is also known for its biking system, where more than 50% of the student population uses bicycles as their main mode of transportation. On the East Campus of UCSB, bicyclists have the right of way.
Mascot
UCSB’s mascot is the Ole the Gaucho, named after Douglas Fairbanks' character in the film “The Gaucho”. UCSB is known for having one of the greatest soccer team rivalries with the Cal Poly Mustangs. The two schools have competed together in the Blue-Green Rivalry since 1921.
