Quick History of UC San Diego

UCSD is the seventh oldest of all the UC campuses. The college was first founded in 1903 as the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and later became known as the University of California San Diego in 1960. Nestled on the La Jolla coast, the university rests on 2,141 acres. The campus is known for having an urban feel that is seen in the design of their iconic Geisel Library. The university houses a Large High-Performance Outdoor Shake Table, which is a device that tests structures ability to resist simulated earthquakes.

Mascot

Because of the university’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean, their mascot is appropriately the Triton. According to Greek mythology, the Triton is the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, making him a demigod. Triton has the torso of a human with a mermaid-like tail and is known as a fierce sea warrior.

Notable Rankings

UC San Diego’s School of Medicine and Jacobs School of Engineering are highly esteemed. The campus offers 47 doctoral programs, 35 masters programs, five professional programs, and nine combined doctoral programs with San Diego State University and other UC campuses. Three of their doctoral programs have been ranked first in the nation: biological sciences, Oceanography, and Bioengineering. The university operates 19 organized research units. In 2015, UC San Diego ranked fifth in the nation in research and development expenses with $1.101 billion spent.
