Quick History of UC Irvine

University of California, Irvine was established in 1965 as one of three new UC campuses under the California Master Plan for Higher Education. Rather than named after the surrounding city, the name Irvine was derived from the original landowner, James Irvine. When the school was first opened in 1965, the campus was still under construction, with buildings only 75% completed. Since then, they have grown and now offer 87 undergraduate degree programs, 59 masters, and 46 Ph.D. programs. UCI has seen tremendous growth since its opening and continues to increase their 1,526-acre campus.

With the UCI water polo team winning games just weeks after the school opened, students realized they needed a school mascot and officially chose the anteater in 1965. Peter the Anteater remains as one of the most popular school mascots today. The anteater’s battle cry is “Zot”, which UCI students chant as they throw up the “Rip’em Eaters” hand signal to show school pride.

Notable Rankings

UC Irvine is best known for its research institution, which features programs that specialize in areas like cancer and neuroscience studies. Many of the school’s graduate programs consistently rank in the top-50 nationwide. UCI’s athletic teams have seen numerous sporting achievements with 28 national titles for team sports and with 56 Anteaters having competed in the Olympics. The UCI men’s basketball team has a long-standing rivalry with the 49ers of Long Beach State.
